As a magazine for creative writers, published by an arts-based nonprofit organization, we believe we have a certain social responsibility to uphold and are continually taking steps to not only improve our footprint in terms of magazine production, but also in day-to-day office practices.
Because we’re operating with a small staff, we’re especially proud of the goals we’ve accomplished so far: The most dramatic was the change to a recycled paper stock. Beginning with the January/February 2009 issue, we began printing the body of the magazine on 95 percent recycled paper with 20 percent postconsumer content and the cover on 30 percent postconsumer recycled paper that is FSC certified. With the help of our printer, Publishers Press, we recently moved to a soft-proofing system, which allowed us to cut down on paper and eliminated the shipping of proofs back and forth. Because we rely on our vendors to make the most impact, we were excited to learn that Publishers Press now uses soy-based inks. We’re also working with an environmentally minded paper broker, Dermot Burke of Gould Papers, who is helping us stay aware of mills that consider the environment when producing paper.
Going forward we plan to use our recently completed environmental stewardship policy to help drive change in our office and the companies with which we partner.
