Mother Jones has always been a leader in environmental journalism. Beginning with our very first issue in 1976 (which featured a path-breaking expose of how U.S. corporations exported faulty nuclear technology to third world countries), we’ve covered the environment like no other magazine. Since 2004 alone, Mother Jones has published 53 feature stories on the environment from a roster of writers that reads like a “Who’s Who” of American environmental authors (including Bill McKibben, Al Gore, Paul Roberts, Michael Pollan, and many others). Our cover regularly features environmental stories: in our May/June 2008, we focused at sustainable energy; in November/December 2008, we explored “how to rescue the economy and save the planet” at the same time; and in March/April 2009, our cover story examined sustainable food.
Mother Jones puts our environmental principles into action, not just in editorial priorities, but in our publishing and office-management practices as well. We print our magazine on paper that is 90% post-consumer recycled, and we strive to reduce waste by maximizing efficiency in our print orders and newsstand draws.
